    DESIGNER/COMPANY/LOCATION:
    Unknown Egyptian Silversmith
    METAL:
    Sterling Silver (tested, red streak)
    DETAILS:
~ Late 1800s Handwrought Egyptian Pendant Pin Combo + Added Vintage Chain
~ Design: Cut-out Hunting Scene of a Pharaoh on a chariot, wielding a drawn bow & arrow. One animal is down and a slave stands beside chariot. Notice the ornately adorned, frisky Arabian Stallion and the headdress of the Pharaoh which resembles that of the one pictured far right in my last photo. This story centerpiece is set within a lovely open frame of Bead & Scrollwork.
~ Pendant/Pin Hardware: Features a Period Trombone Safety Clasp, patented in Europe in 1850. Pull the top outwards to release the pin stem. Bail is attached for a chain. Weighs 14.8 grams
~ Pendant/Pin Stamps: Has a tiny cartouche with an illegible mark. Below that is what I think may be a partial “Tughra” Sultan mark (see below).
~ Egypt was a province of the Ottoman Empire from 1517 to 1918 and each reigning Sultan had their own “Tugrah” mark. This was a calligraphic mark that was affixed to all official documents, but also appeared on precious metal items throughout the various provinces. Tughra marks are notoriously difficult to date, every little detail counts, and those are often worn or badly stamped. Prior to 1876, Egypt had no standardized hallmark system in place. Many wealthy Europeans embarked a "Grand Tour" of the world in the 1800s, often traveling for two years, and this piece was most likely created with tourist trade in mind.
~ Vintage Sterling Chain: 17” 2mm Rolo Link, weighs 5.7 grams; Has early Lobster Claw Clasp from the 1970s which is when this clasp was first used. Has patina which matches well with the pendant. This is a really nice chain in excellent condition!
~ The first great Egyptian Revival period started in the late 19th century. The excavation of the tombs in the 1870s created an extreme fascination with Egyptian symbols and inspired the creation of "Egyptian Revival" jewelry which featured sphinxes, scarab beetles and other design elements influenced by Egypt.
~ You are actually getting 3 pieces of jewelry here! Wear as a brooch or a necklace and utilize the substantial chain for use with other pendants or as an accent necklace.
    CONDITION:
    Excellent
    Antique condition
considering the age! This estate piece has obviously been kept polished by its previous (now deceased) owner and savvy collector who had in her possession many fine things from all over the world. Two prongs are missing, but the centerpiece is very stable. Please view all photos to judge for yourself keeping in mind that they’re high def Canon pics which exaggerate any blemishes that may be present.
